Photograph: Alamy

White sands and glowing blue inexperienced waters aren’t the primary issues I affiliate with British seashores, so I had a pleasant shock later in life once I visited Achmelvich and paddled alongside a shoreline speckled with beautiful clear, shiny seashores set towards an unspoiled rugged backdrop. A close-by rustic youth hostel transformed from an previous schoolhouse has a picnic space for having fun with the lengthy northern summer time nights and the workers know the very best spots for snorkelling and kayaking.

Pick up the footpath to the left of the village church; there’s a small National Trust automobile park in the midst of the village and Highertown Farm campsite reverse it. A 20-minute stroll following the stream (with kids entertained by a wide range of NT-installed actions) brings you to a sheltered sand-and-shingle seaside with waterfall. There are not any services, and it isn’t well-known, so you might have all of it to your self. For me, the proper finish to a day journey right here, and a reward for finishing the steep stroll again, is to browse the secondhand bookstall within the fairly 14th-century church.

A 20-minute boat journey from Guernsey is Herm Island, a slice of paradise, with some spectacular seashores. I have recollections as a baby of discovering treasured shells on Shell Beach. As an adolescent, I spent summer time holidays sunbathing and gossiping within the sand dunes with buddies. The steep stroll all the way down to the beautiful sheltered Belvoir Bay was price it for the turquoise waters and powdery sand. It’s considered one of Europe’s best-kept secrets and techniques. Now I stay up for taking my very own kids again to this particular island that holds so many great recollections.

I found myself in Sperlonga, south of Rome, when my practice to Naples broke down – and I stayed there for every week, nearly tenting out on the seaside due to its magnificence. The sand is delicate and heat, and the ocean varies between calm within the morning then tougher within the afternoon, when the wind picks up. The views – from Circe’s Mount to Neptune’s cave, with the whitewashed previous city on the precise glistening within the night daylight – are merely beautiful. No marvel Ulysses didn’t need to depart. Eat gelato or dine at Pizzeria Tramonto on the seafront.

Dubrovnik’s sandy shore: Elaphiti islands, Croatia

Sunj Beach, a popular sandy beach on Lopud Island

Photograph: Alamy

Buoyed by an optimistic climate forecast, a good friend and I climbed on to a rickety boat in Cavtat, south of Dubrovnik for a tour of the Elaphiti Islands. We found them at their most serene. The island of Lopud is home to Sunj seaside, one of many few sandy seashores round Dubrovnik, which we had nearly to ourselves in October. Yachts bobbed on the light waves, whereas the seaside bars served the final prospects of the season. Sunlight bounced off the iridescent fish circling our toes as we stepped into the ocean and heated the sand round us as we sat on the shore. The final rays of solar disappeared behind the hills that ring the seaside, and it was time for us to stroll again to the docks, a 30-minute journey previous woodland, homes and farms. As the boat pulled away, we knew that we’d be again with subsequent 12 months’s solar.
