LONDON (Reuters) – Britain hopes to go legal guidelines to permit the capping of the most typical type of gasoline and electrical energy tariffs for tens of millions of households by the summer time, a junior minister within the business division instructed a parliamentary committee on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Theresa May stated in October she would impose controls to sort out what she referred to as “rip-off energy prices”, sending shares within the main suppliers tumbling.
Ofgem stated final week that the cap could possibly be in place by Christmas 2018, supplied parliament handed the mandatory legal guidelines by the summer time.
“The intention would be to introduce the bill shortly, with the intention of getting royal assent before the summer recess,” stated Claire Perry, minister of state on the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
Parliament normally begins its summer time recess in mid to late July.
The government has stated the cap can be non permanent and set by regulator Ofgem. It revealed draft laws in October.
Home energy payments have doubled in Britain over the previous decade to a mean of about 1,150 kilos ($1,500) a yr.
