Actor Jeff Goldblum drops his debut jazz album simply in time for the Christmas stocking stuffer season.
Better recognized for his idiosyncratic display screen presence, Goldblum can be an avid beginner pianist, who has been gigging in his home city of Los Angeles because the 1990s.
His piano taking part in and barely nasal tenor voice are nice, not ground-breaking. But his self-deprecating humour and willingness to concede the limelight to a succession of feminine visitor vocalists, in addition to higher musicians, make this album a laid-back charmer.
The dwell setting, within the hallowed Capitol Studios in Hollywood, captures the relaxed speakeasy vibe generated by Goldblum and his band.
Check out the LOL insider jokes on his duet with comedienne Sarah Silverman, Me And My Shadow, which manages to reference former United States vice-president Al Gore and work in a velociraptor sound impact burble, in addition to a bit of strange banter about butter into the four-minute monitor.
Trumpeter Till Bronner contributes his silky cool tones on a number of tracks, together with a shady It Never Entered My Mind.
And singer Imelda May, who seems on three tracks, shines particularly in a bluesy This Bitter Earth.
