KUALA LUMPUR • Controversial Malaysian rapper Namewee is underneath police investigation for allegedly insulting Islam with a Chinese New Year video that options dancers carrying canine masks and performing suggestive strikes, reviews stated yesterday.
The video options the rapper, whose identify is Wee Meng Chee, sitting on a chair in entrance of a domed constructing and mimicking barks of canines from across the world.
Several black-clad dancers carrying masks of canine – an animal thought-about unclean in Islam – gyrate round him.
The video, which marks the beginning of the Chinese Year of the Dog, generated accusations that it was filmed in entrance of a mosque within the Malaysian administrative capital of Putrajaya.
National police chief Mohamad Fuzi Harun reportedly stated a probe had been launched into the artist for hurting non secular emotions and “transmitting offensive communications”.
Namewee, who is reported to be overseas, faces as much as a 12 months in jail if found responsible.
In a YouTube video, he denied having insulted Islam and stated the domed constructing seen within the background was the prime minister’s workplace, not a mosque.
The probe was launched after complaints from Muslim teams and public criticism from the deputy prime minister over the video, which has greater than 700,000 views on YouTube since its release on Feb 10.
